what we’ve achieved
Bulla understands that when grown unsustainably palm oil contributes to deforestation, impacting wildlife and local communities and that workers and farmers producing palm oil in some places have suffered poor working conditions. We also understand that switching to alternative vegetable oils to palm oil wouldn’t reduce these impacts. Sunflower, rapeseed, and soy have much lower yields per hectare than palm oil, so more land is needed to produce an equivalent amount of oil. What’s more, millions of farmers and their families work on palm oil plantations and smallholdings, providing them with the income for basic essentials such as food, clean water, and housing. Plus, it allows many workers to send their children to school. Bulla supports the production of sustainable palm oil, and since 2014, Bulla has been a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). RSPO is a global non-profit group that promotes sustainable palm oil production practices to benefit nature and communities. As of 2024, palm oil is just 1% of Bulla’s total ingredient production volume. Of this, the total volume of palm oil is 99.05% certified, with 66% being RSPO-certified segregated, and 33.95% being RSPO-certified Mass Balance. Our target is to source 100% RSPO certified Segregated palm oil by 2027. Segregated palm oil is from certified sustainable sources, which is kept separate throughout the entire supply chain, from the plantation to the end product. This ensures that the palm oil in the final product can be traced back to specific certified plantations or mills, whereas mass balance sustainable and non-sustainable palm oil are mixed at various stages of the supply chain.
what’s next
We are currently reviewing Bulla’s Responsible and Ethical Sourcing Framework- this will provide an evidence-based process to identify and prioritise Bulla’s greatest supply chain risks, so we can ensure we are working to, and working with suppliers that operate to thorough social and environmental standards in areas where we identify a need to improve and work towards achieving our responsible, ethical and supply chain goals.
being transparent and accountable
We have set a goal to create and make Bulla’s sustainability knowledge platform to be an open source by 2028.
driving innovation and technology
Bulla will actively seek partnerships with research and development (R&D) bodies, peak bodies, suppliers, peers, and customers to find innovative ways to continuously make dairy more sustainable.
